Antwerp-diamonds: Learn more about diamonds from Antwerp

Diamonds are the hardest minerals in the world. Their power lays in their simple structure. How the diamond comes into existance is a mystery. What we know is that they all were created at high temperatures and enormous pressure miljards of years ago. This happened about a 100 miles under the surface of the earth. Volcano eruptions have brought them up.

Colors of a diamond:

Most diamonds look colorless, but actually most of them have a yellow or brown shade. A colorless diamond is very rare and so very expensive. Generally, people like them the most. But there are many beautiful color shades like yellow, champaign or brown. Very rare are the so-called fancy colors like:

green diamond
red diamond
blue diamond
pink diamond
amber yellow diamond

The quality and value of a diamond lays in the four C's:

Carat
The weight of a diamond is measured in carats. One carat equals to 0.2 gram and is divided into 100 points. So 50 points is 0.5 carat or 0.1 gram.

Color
When for the first time looking at diamonds, they all seem colorless. However, if you check them better you’ll see that most diamonds have a yellowish or brownish shade. Only very few diamonds are pure. Of course, the whiter the diamond the more expensive.

Clarity
Also the clarity ads to the quality of a diamond. If, by a 10 power magnification, an expert can’t find any flaws or inclusions the diamond is considered to be "Flawless". It is not so that a diamond that has some small flaws doesn’t sparkle anymore and isn’t a beautiful stone. Only its value is lower than that of a clear one.

Cut
By cut we mean two different things: The quality of the cutting and the shape in which the diamond is made. To get an as high as possible brilliance, the diamond has to be cut and facetted in a way that a maximum quantity of light is reflected. When a diamond is cut too thick or too shallow, it will loose a lot of light through the underside. Only a perfect cut gives an optimal brilliance and fire.

Carat: The weight of a diamond is expressed in carats.
